NZPA-ReuterVillanova, Pen New Zealand’s Rod Dixon won the 5000 metres at the Jumbo Elliott Invitational athletics meeting on Saturday while John Walker came third in the mile. The American runner. Steve Scott, aged 25, overtook Sydney Maree. of South Africa, in the last 30 yards of the mile to take first place, coming from the back of the pack to win the featured event in 3min 52.265ec. Maree clocked 3:52.44 with Walker third in 3:55.89. Scott’s time was well outside the world record of 3:48.8, set by Britain's Steve Ovett last July., ~i Ireland’s Eamonn Coghlan. the 28-year-old world indoor record holder in the mile, challenged for only a short time. He gained ground in the back stretch coming into the final lap, but, fell behind when Scott and Maree broke away. Dixon won the 5000 metres in 14:17.38. American Matt Centrowintz was second in 14:19.67. ahead of his compatriot, Mike Mansy, in 14:26.90. . James Robinson, of the United States, ran the fastest 800 metres of the year, coming in at 1:44.63.
