Three die on Cheh roads

Three people were killed in separate road accidents in Christchurch yesterday. This brought the unofficial holiday week-end road toll to 14. The death toll was seven for the whole of last year s Queen’s Birthday week-end, which the Ministry of Tran-' sport.records as from 4 p.m.Friday to 8 a.m. Tuesday. A man died after his car hit a building at the corner of Manchester Street and Moorhouse Avenue at 5.30 ).m. He was Sdward Currie, aged 57, of J Hornby. car collided at the corner of Hereford Street and Barbadoes Street at 6.15 p.m. He was Dennis Chapman, aged about 30, of Hereford Street. A man was killed and two others injured when .-three cars collided at the corner of Woodham Road and Kerrs Road, about, 9-p.m. Late last evening the police had not released the name of the dead man. when two cars collided in Lowther Crescent, near the Sockburn roundabout, shortly before 7 a.m. yesterday. Two were taken to hospital with moderate head lacerations and the third suffered minor chest injuries. Too much speeding and a high incidence of drunken driving meant a busy holiday week-end, according to Min-

istry of Transport officers in Christchurch. By late, last evening they had attended 32 accidents around the city, 12 of which involved injuries to motorists. Two arrests were made during alcohol-related traffic incidents, and nine motorists were asked for blood samples. “It was the usual story of either speeding or drunken driving leading to accidents,” said a. spokesman for the Ministry of Transport. “People never seem to learn.” ’ Traffic flow into the city was ’heavy throughout last evening,' particularly from the north, but the influx did not cause any great ’ problems in spite of dense fog in some areas, which cleared after 9.30 p.m.
