Values seeks ‘fair deal’ TV coverage

PA Auckland Values Party members will ask the chairman of the Broadcasting Council, Mr lan Cross, for “a fair deal” on election coverage when they meet him tomorrow.

The party wants its opening meeting covered and a chance to debate issues on current affairs programmes. In asking for coverage of the opening meeting, it points to the extensive live coverage the three main political parties will get this year for their annual conferences.

Mr Cross has already announced that Labour, National, and Social Credit will get equal time. The three joint leaders of

Values — Mr Alan Wilkinson, Mrs Janet Roborgh, and Mr Jon Mayson — met party officials in Auckland at the week-end to discuss election strategy and Values expects to field 15 to 20 candidates, up to six of them in Auckland. They will concentrate on their areas of greatest strength, such as New Plymouth, where energy projects are a big issue. Values says it is not fighting to win. Rather it sees the election as a chance to push such issues as the social impact of big business, public participation in government, and the effect of technology.
