Air N.Z. staffing

Sir,’—On my recent trip to Auckland four hostesses were on duty. Two of them were doing nothing; they were, not needed. This is just another example of Government enterK rises being over-staffed. If Air [ew Zealand can still operate after making 500 people redundant they should do so for the greatest future for the greatest number of people concerned and stop this continual wastage of funds.—Yours, etc., SUSAN RODGERS. April 24, 1981.

[An Air New Zealand spokesman replies: "The ■number of cabin crew is dictated,, first,. by safety considerations' and the minimum number is laid down by regulation. A second consideration is the number of crew required to maintain service standards and this is kept under review. Your correspondent is not correct in saying that 500 people have been . made redundant. However, because of economic circumstances, the airline has been - reducing staff numbers through non-replacement and by providing opportunities for voluntary early retirement.”]
