Billets for tour police

Spare rooms at The Princess Margaret Hospital nurses’ hostel will be used by police reinforcements who will be in Christchurch for the rugby test between South Africa and New Zealand on August 15. The chairman of the North Canterbury Hospital Board. Mr T. C. Grigg, said that the number of police who would stay at the hostel, and the number of rooms which would be used, would remain confidential.

The board has been concerned about the under-use of the hostel. It recently began letting rooms to Air New Zealand employees on training courses. Mr Grigg said that the board did not have a policy regarding the Springbok tour. It had not been discussed either in open meeting or in committee. The board regarded the accommodating of police as a simple matter of assistance. “We are very determined not to get into' any sort of

controversy regarding the tour.” he said.

The board is also making sure that it does not have to spend "one cent" to billet the police. Mr Grigg said that they would be charged a sufficient amount to cover the costs, and he hinted that the board might look for -a small profit from it.
