Australian telecom bans
NZPA . ’ Sydney Telecom unions will go ahead with industrial action which is expected to have wide-ranging effects on Australia’s communications system from today. Although a full bench o. the Arbitration Commission will convene at 11.30 ,a.m. today to trv to deadlock in the dispute,' the
Telecom unions say it is too late to call off their bans. The unions will ban the installation and repair of equipment, a move expected to hit business services as well as affecting S.T.D. and international calls. The bans are being im-. posed in support of a $25 industry allowance and an 8 . per cent pay rise.
The Australian Telecommunications Employees’ Association federal secretary, Mr Bill Mansfield, said that unless the Arbitration Commission full bench gave its approval for Telecom to negotiate privately on pay claims' with the two unions, he would expect Telecom to start '*■ standing-down many union members.
