Coast shines in rain

PA Greymouth A slightly jaded Northland, playing its second representative rugby league match in two days, was beaten 19-3 by West Coast on a sodden Wingham Park in Greymouth yesterday. Heavy rain fell throughout the match, but both sides handled the slippery ball surprisingly well and the large crowd was treated to a lively match. Northland had Coast on the back foot early in the first quarter, and the match was only 10 minutes old when the big second-rower Dan Campbell crashed over for a try which put the visitors ahead.

Coast fought back, however, and although the Northland defence looked good under pressure, it cracked eventually and Coast started accumulating points. Scorers were: West Coast 19 (B. Green, M. McEwan 2, J. Bennett, K. Calder tries, A. Coll 2 goals), Northland 3 (D. Campbell try).
