Restriction on children

Sir,—l feel I should assure the manager of Scoffs lunchbar of at least one customer.

As a single and childless adult who has little interest in children’s company, particularly at mealtimes, I appreciate the type of environment and service Mr Barnes is trying to provide. I wish to point out that some proprietors effectively restrict their clientele by the prices they charge, or the standard of dress they expect. I admire Mr Barnes's honesty and courage in stating so clearly his criteria for admission, and to have the confidence that his lunch-bar fills a marketing gap sufficient to be financially viable. Perhaps Mr Barnes should feel free to omit the apology at the top of his sign.—Yours, etc.,

C. F. MEIKLE. May 27, 1981.
