'Press’ chess tournament

Secondary and intermediate schools in Canterbury are invited to enter teams for the annual chess tournament sponsored by "The Press” in the. second term. This year’s tournament will be the eleventh and because of its popularity — 25 teams entered last year which necessitated three different grades — “The Press” has increased its sponsorship to $250. When the inaugural competition was held in 1971, 12 teams competed in one grade and the sponsorship was $lOO. Entries had doubled by 1976 when the sponsorship was also doubled. With considerable interest shown by the intermediate schools and girls’ teams "in recent years, the C grade has been restricted to those teams only. However, if a girls’ school considers that it is strong enough, it may enter one of the other grades. - The allocation of prize money this year is: A grade, $6O, $4O, $3O, $2O; B grade, $3O, $2O; C grade. $3O, $2O. Entries for the tournament, which should be ad-

Secondary schools entering just one team are expeetd to compete in the A grade, although provision will be made for a school which has an inexperienced team to enter the B grade. Any school which considers that it has sufficient strength to enter teams in the premier grade may do so, although schools entering two teams are expected to have one in each grade. Schools are invited to submit teams of six players and to supply a ranking list before the first round. The playing order should remain the same . unless the organisers are informed of positional changes. Each team is asked to name a liaison officer and to supply a private and school telephone, number. All teams will receive a full draw for the tournament, score sheets,, result slips and a copy of the rules and list of liaison officers. ' '
