Cheap arms

Sir,—l was sickened by your report concerning cheap arms ("The Press,” May 25), especially: "The New Zealand line has been that it is in America’s interest to have a strong, well equipped ally to represent it in the South Pacific.” It is almost

unbelievable that even a sycophantic National Government could so unashamedly and openly indulge in American boot-licking for cheap arms so that we can better represent their interests in our part of the world. I think I would rather be without another fancy frigate supposedly to stop the Russian and Chinese hordes with, than to have to hear any more about the grovelling 'performances of Mr Gill in Washington. I am not anti-American and do believe in the need for reasonable armed forces but we can neither afford the luxury of a worthless American alliance nor to forgo our national pride' and independence to preserve it. — Yours, etc., D. J. O'ROURKE. May 25. 1981.
