Bridge ‘dangerous’
Wellington reporter The Rangitata River bridge on the main south road is in a dangerous condition and the National Roads Board has decided to spend $170,000 on remedial work.
The work is to protect the pier foundations, which were exposed during the 200-year flood in December, 1979, and further uncovered by two floods in 1980. The Ministry of Works had hoped that normal shingle movements would restore the stability Of the affected piers. This had not happened, said the director of reading (Mr F. A. Langbein). It was now necessary to restore the piers to make the bridge completely safe in the event of future floods.
