Singapore port has good year

The Port of Singapore; one of the world’s most rapidly expanding ports over the last few years, reported a good year for 1980, according to the Port of Singapore Authority’s annual report, but some economic slow-downs were encountered. Reduced rates of growth in several areas were blamed on “the general economic slowdown in Europe and America” by the authority’s chairman (Mr Lim Kim San). The number of ships which called at the port during 1980 increased only 6 per cent over 1979 when a 15 per cent rise was recorded and shipping tonnage, was up by only 4 per cent, or 17.6 million gross registered tons, as compared with an 18 per cent increase the previous year. The port’s oil terminals, showed a tonnage decrease of 1.5 per cent, the first decline in mineral oil cargo handling since 1975. However, the port’s container terminal volume continued at a high level with 11 million tonnes of containerised cargo being handled. as compared with nine million tonnes in 1979. The year saw 2080 ships visiting the terminal and working 865,000 containers. This represented a 30 per cent increase in numbers of containers handled as compared with the previous year. Container vessels accounted for 37 per cent of the port’s total tonnage handled. In anticipation of a continuing increase in containerised cargoes, the port is constructing its sixth container berth which should be commissioned next year and two conventional berths are being converted to handle container ships. The total cost of the new facilities is estimated at $146 million.
