Oil from N.Z. fish could earn $30M.

PA Tauranga A New Zealand fish species, the Orange Roughie, had the potential to produce 530 million of oil annually, the Minister for the Environment (Dr Shearer) has told a National Party meeting in Tauranga.

Found on the Chatham Rise recently, the Orange Roughie was described as a “fascinating character’’ by Dr Shearer.

He said oil from the fish was similar to sperm whale oil.

The importance of developing small industries, especially by using technology. was emphasised by Dr Shearer.

Income from- selling the Orange Roughie for meat would . total only about 53 million a year compared with the 530 million return for its oil, he said.
