Fire damages flat
Fire severely damaged a pensioner flat at 18 Barnett Avenue, Sydenham, about 5 p.m. yesterday. The flat, one of a block of four, was well ablaze when engines from the Spreydon and Central fire stations arrived. Firemen wearing breath-
ing apparatus searched the smoke-filled dwelling, but found it empty. They were able to prevent the blaze from spreading to the other flats in the block. One engine was still at the flat late last evening to guard against further outbreaks of fire.
