Board adopts new rating
Ratepayers in the commercial sector will have to carry a bigger percentage of any increase in rates levied by the Christchurch Transport Board next year. It was decided at yesterday’s board meeting to seek changes to its act to provide for differential rating on the 1982-83 rates. This means that householders will not have to contri-. bute such a big percentage of any increase as they did this year, when rates rose 59 per cent. The difference will now
fall on the shoulders of the business sector. Mr C. L. Sugden said lie was worried what effect differential rating would have on the business community, especially as it was this section which was being attacked by a rise in rates. Mr Anderson said differential rating was designed to relieve rate increases on householders. Mr Sugden and Mrs H. Bonisch voted against the implementation of differential rating.
