Ferry tenders
Tenders ' will be called later this week for a new Cook Strait rail ferry, and will close in mid-August. The Associate Minister of Railways (Mr Malcolm), said yesterday that a Government decision on the replacement of the ferry Aramoana would be made about the end of the year. He said that the proposed ferry would be larger than the present ferries, which would result in greatly improved fuel and wages costs in relation to the amount of freight moved. It was reported earlier this month that the Cabinet had been considering a replacement for the Aramoana; which is the oldest of the four existing ferries, ahd that a larger ship costing about $47 million was likely. '• The Aramoana, which entered service in 1962, was found to have a serious corrosion problem when she underwent a mid-life refit two years ago. She is due for a complete survey late next year. It is still possible, but has not been confirmed, that the new ferry might replace the Aranui as well as the Aramoana.
