Poor storage caused illness?

PA Dunedin The second bout of food poisoning at Cherry Farm Hospital in four weeks was probably caused by incorrect food storage, according to Dunedin’s Deputy Medical Officer of Health'. Dr B. .11. Dohertv.

About 120 patients have suffered from the poisoning — 30 to 40 from two villas about four weeks ago. and about 80 from three other villas last week, according to the medical superintendent of the Otago Hospital Board, Dr K. E. Berendsen

During the first bout of poisoning, an elderly male patient’ died. The Dunedin Coroner (Mr J. M. Conradson) was notified, and the police are investigating the death as agents of the Coroner. Dr Berendsen said although the death was referred to the Coroner he did not think there was any connection with the food poisoning. which had been found to have been caused by a common but non-toxic organ-, ism.

He said he was "pretty sure” he knew which organism had caused the poisoning and suspected it bred because food was stored at the wrong temperature. After the first case of poisoning at the hospital, the department recommended changes to food handling and refrigeration. Its report on the latest incident is expected in about a week.
