Good judo showing

Tno strength and depth of Canterbury judo was well illustrated by’ the performances of the boys’’ and girls' teams in the national championships in Auckland. Canterbury won all the teams' awards, a’nd the individuals returned with a total of six gold medals, two silvers and 10 bronze medals. Three of the winners were from the bovs’ grades: C. Donnelly (under-25kg), G. Archer (under-45kg) and S. Muir (under55kg) all won their competitions, while Muir was also third in the boys’ open competition.' The girls to win were B. Lefty (under-35kg), K. Gilbert (under45kg) and K. Moohan (under-

50kg). while L. Ayers was third in the latter grade.

There were no winners in the intermediate grade, but ample placings. D. Hill was second in the open and third in the under60kg; P. May and A. Hundlebee second and third respectively in the under-55kg class; and M. Muir third in the under-65kg.

The performances of Hill and S. Muir were particularly noteworthy, as both conceded 10 to 15kg to their opponents. With the Canterbury players doing so well, the province should have a strong representation in the national junior team to tour Australia later this year.
