Surgeon sues
A brain surgeon, claiming that a chimpanzee famed for the ability to talk in sign language bit off one of his fingers, has filed a $3.08 million lawsuit against the University of Oklahoma, the animal’s trainer, and the company that built her cage. Dr Karl Pribram, a neurosurgeon, alleged in the lawsuit that he was “permanently disabled” when the chimpanzee, named Washoe, pulled his right hand and arm through the bars of its cage as he visited the University’s institute of primate studies in April last year. The surgeon claimed Washoe bit off the middle finger of his right hand and severed and “severely. damaged the nerves, muscles, and tendons” of the hand.—Oklahoma City.
