Youth of the Year
A Wellington girl, Miss Phillipa Whitton, has won the 1981 Wales Bank-Lions International Youth of the Year award.
A Canterbury University student, Miss Jackie Peacey, was chosen as a runner-up.
This is the fifth year of the awards, which are organised by the Lions Clubs of New Zealand for young people aged between 17 and 21.
The contestants were judged on their leadership ability, general knowledge of New Zealand, personality, citizenship cultural interest, public speaking, academic ability, and sports participation.
Miss Whitton will spend six weeks at an international youth camp in Dallas, Texas.
