Lectures on China

“Assessing China Today” is the theme for five lectures organised by the Canterbury branch of the United Nations Association-of New Zealand. The lectures will be at Aldersgate each Wednesday lunchtime from this week until June 24. The information officer for the branch, Mr J. D. Grocott, said that he was aware of an increased interest in China by Christchurch residents, and he hoped that it would be borne out by the attendances. Each of the five guest speakers had travelled to China, and would cover these subjects: background history,

agriculture, the Chinese economy, and "How to know China.” The speakers include Professor J. D. Stewart, the principal of Lincoln College and a director of China-New Zealand Agricultural Consultants, and Mr A. Cargo, who spent, two years teaching at the Central China Teachers’ College in Wuhan. At each lecture the chair will be taken by a member of the United Nations Association, the National Council of Women, the Workers’ Educational Association, or the Institute of International Affairs.
