Sir Castleton Auckland fancy

Special correspondent Auckland The Rowe Cup is seldom won by a four-year-old but there is every likelihood that at Alexandra Park this evening a horse of that age will take the $35,000 event for the second year on end. Last year, the grand Wellington mare, Special Pride, won handsomely: this time, Sir Castleton and Cal Brydon look to have outstanding prospects. The race has drawn an exceptionally strong field, including seven South Islandtrained ' andidates. Several others in the lineup are owned in the south but trained in the North Island. Sir Castleton, from Ashburton, showed on the second night of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on Thursday he was every bit as sood as claimed in the south. , Against much the same opposition as he will meet tonight, he burst through brilliantly on the inside when the race was all but over and snatched victory from another southerner, About Now, It brought Sir Castleton’s record to nine wins and a second from 11 starts, a remarkable achievement for a trotter. His successes in only two appearances in open class. ,< Cal Brydon, which is trained at Clevedon has been much busier, having had 20 starts. ■ His score of six wins and six seconds, on the face of it, is not as impressive as that of Sir Castleton, but over all he has competed in stronger company. < At his latest appearance, Cal Brydon was beaten by a nose by No Response off

level marks on the opening nignt of the Rowe Cup meeting. His performance maintained a run of wonderfully consistent form — three wins, two seconds, a fourth and a fifth in as many .tarts. Both Cal Brydon and Sir Castleton have drawn well on the front mark. If none 1 of the bal.Jted-out horses gets a start, they will come in to Nos. 6 and 7 respectively.- And as they have shown themselves to be reliable beginners, they should be able to take i.i handy positions. Bright though their prospects are, they seem bound to receive stiff opposition, notably from- No Response, Kenwood Song, Stormy Morn and About Now.

No Response was far from disgraced when he finished sixth on Thursday evening. He was off the hard mark of 20m and l.ad- anythi: j but a good run. Last Saturday, he finished at a great rate to beat Cal Brydon. No Response, considering his record — he was the inter-Dominicn Champion two years ago — looks well placed on 10m, and being a great stayer, the 3200 m journey will suit aim.
