Book allocation doubled
Heathcote County Council’s library service was "totally inadequate,” Cr M. Taylor said at the council’s finance committee last evening.
After some discussion, the committee decided that twice as much as last year should be allowed for the purchase of library books in this year’s estimates.
The committee had been told that the supply of children’s books to libraries outside the city would increase from $230 to $275 for each 100 books.
Last year the county had taken 1930 books. The new charges would mean an increase of about $B6B for the county for the same number of books this year.
The committee recommended that Heathcote increase its allocation of books lo 2250.
. Cr Taylor said she hoped that within (he next few years Heathcote would provide a better library service.
The Heathcote Promotion Council will probably •sign up as a financial member of the Canterbury Promotion Council.
After listening to the promotion council’s chairman. Mr T. Inch, and its executive officer, Mr B. Dunstan, the council’s finance committee voted to recommend that Heathcote join the organisation. The. promotion, council has budgeted for 'local bodies to contribute 69 per cent ($61,274) of its income this financial year. Last year, local bodies contributed. 75 per cent ($52,544) of the income, 10 per cent down on what the council had budgeted. The full council will discuss Heathcote’s contribution to the promotion council and this figure will be referred to the county’s estimate meeting.
