Defence spending

Sirl noticed (“The Press,” May 6) that, the Government is considering buying a new warship in these times when communications world-wide could be used to send out a ray of hope for the world, by denouncing all war participation and living for peace. Instead of going to the aid of so-called friends who need, as they say, help in defence, we might put up a shining light which says peace here. Peace must have more meaning when striven for in peace-time than the fighting for freedom from tyranny. Surely we could remain nearer to normality in relationships by pursuing this line of behaviour.—Yours, etc., NORMAN A. MARSH. May 6, 1981.
