Rajiv enters politics
NZPA-Reuter New Delhi Rajiv Gandhi, son of the Indian Prime Minister (Mrs Indira Gandhi), formally entered politics yesterday and will run for Parliament next month. The ruling Congress (I) Party said Rajiv, aged 36, would contest the Amethi constituency in northern India in one of seven byelections to be held on June 14. The Amethi seat in Uttar Pradesh State was held by Rajiv’s younger brother, San-
jay, who died in a stunt plane crash in June last year. Sanjay was widely regarded as Mrs Gandhi's heir apparent and party members had urged Rajiv to fill the gap in Indian politics left by his brother’s death. Rajiv, a quiet, thoughtful man, has acted as a personal assistant to Mrs Gandhi since Sanjay died. His decision to enter politics was described by party spokesmen as a turning point in Indian politics.
