German politician shot dead

The Economics Minister of West Germany’s Hessen state was killed by a gunman'at his home yesterday, the police said.
Mr Heinz Karry, aged 61, died in an ambulance on his way to hospital after being shot several times in the stomach. The attacker fired three shots at Mr Karry from a small calibre gun after bursting into his home, a spokeman for the state criminal office said.
Police hunting for the killer -said there was no immediate sign of him or possible accomplices. Mr Karry, the senior Free Democratic politician in Hessen’s Left-Liberal Government coalition, was a controversial figure. Left-wingers and ecologists strongly criticised his outspoken support for plans to extend Frankfurt airport and to build a nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in the state.
Mr Karry was also national treasurer of the Free Democratiic Party and the weekly magazine “Der Spiegel” recently accused him of irregularities in connection with campaign contributions.
The Frankfurt Public Prosecutor (Mr Heinz Haueisen) said that one or more assailants climbed up a ladder into Mr Karry’s open bedroom .window and fired on him over hs wife’s head.
