No Response impresses

PA Auckland No Response produced a strong finish to beat Cal Brydon in the Gentry Lodge Free-For-All, first leg of the T.A.B. double at AlexanP k on Saturday evening. No Response’s win has brought him to the forefront of favouritism for the rich Rowe Cup on the final night of the Auckland Trotting Club’s three-night meeting; on Saturday. Driven by Richard Brosnan, No Response became pocketed in on the rails towards the rear of the field with the surprisingly little favoured Cal Brydon on his outside.

It . was not until John Newberry moved Cal Brydon forward to be handy with 600 m to run, that Brosnan was able to manoeuvre No Response clear and he tracked Cal Brydon all the way.

Once into the straight it looked like Cal Brydon was going to win when he collared the pacemaker, Donovan, but No Response produced a grand finish to gain the winning advantage in the final stride.

Cal Brydon was only a

1 nose away and was far from! i disgraced in his effort and I has further enhanced his - prospects for the Rowe Cup. 1 Thriller Dee ran on well ■ for third one and a quarter

lengths back. Tne talented filly Time’s Up headed an all South Island finish to the C. I'. I McCarthy Ladyship Stakes, ..and leg of the T.A.B. ; double. Driven by her trainer Jack j Smolensk!, lime’s Up struck ; one or two problems in the • running but over the final i few hundred metres asserted

her superiority. The northerner, Yvette Bromac, was squeezed up badly soon after the start and lost a lot of ground, and going down the back for the final time broke for several strides. Jailed off three lengths last going into’ the home turn her driver, Colin, Butler, urged her forward and she swung about eight horses wide into the straight and did well to finish sixth.
