Compton’s mixed day

Special correspondent Westport The visiting horseman and top jockey, Bruce Compton, enjoyed a day of mixed success at Westport yesterday. Along with his closest rival, David Walsh, Compton flew to the meeting from Foxton and started the day with a most impressive book of rides.

A rather distant tenth in the first was quickly followed by an adventurous second when his mount, Rane’s Gift, looked all over a winner turning for

hon.e. The horse then decided to gake off for the car park and it need a sharp reminder from Compton to encourage the gelding to settle back to his work. The damage bad been done, however, and the pair finished second, two lengths behind the winner Startle.

A third on Graphite, a winner on the first day, and a second on Double March preceeded win No. 108 for Compton when the Leeston-owned mare, Clover Fairy. look out the Rod Menzies Memorial. The favourite, Father Lou, could do no better

than second for Compton, while this performance was repeated by Cremedo, his mount in the seventh.

The most promising four-year-old and perhaps the most impressive performer at the meeting, Leggy Lee, owned by the Hawera couple Mr aind Mrs Ron Nolan, gave the Takanini horseman his second winner for the day. A lot will be heard of this Grey William gelding which Compton described as “taking one stride to three.” Compton’s rnouht in the last, Mister Bruce, finished well ■ back in the field.
