Hi Roona gets up
Special correspondent Westport The five-horse sprint field in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Dominion Breweries Handicap, provided the most thrilling finish of the day at Westport yesterday. Only a head and a nose separated the first three place-getters. The Greymouth-owned gelding. Hi Roona, made it something of a day for vet-j eran horses when he com-1
pleted the double with Sir : James at odds of nearly 19I to-one. i Hi Roona has now won 21 i races — four of them on the • Westport track — and has . been a splendid interest for ; his owners, Messrs John Morris, Graeme Finlay and Ron Pinn. Ridden by his trainer, Morris Thornley, Hi Roona jumped well and although [racing a little wide on the I track, disputed the pace with!
Bandalero. The . northern sprinter appeared to have Hi Roona’s measure at the turn but when Thornlei' asked for an extra effort the Riccarton - trained sprinter responded valiantlv. The topweight, Scotch Mist, after drifting at the 500 m, found another gear and just missed pegging back Hi Roona. Bandalero was a nose awayi third, Ernest a distant fourth and Jane Again a well-beat-en fifth.
