Costs of treatment

Sir, — I read the letter of April 30 with a great deal of sympathy. The way in which a society cares for those who are less than privileged for one reason or another is a measute of its civilisation. In that respect we are less civilised then we were just a few years ago. Even in terms of the dollar, that seems to be the altar at which the present Government worships. I pay tribute to the late Norman Kirk whose humanitarian policies were implemented immediately he took office. There must be many who mourn him. I certainly miss my Christmas bonus and concessions. To the Catholic priest who gave me money for a meal, taxi, doctor’s visit, plus costs of writing materials to cover the postage rates of this tribute, this altruistic gesture saved me from possible prosecution. — Yours, etc., (Mrs) MAUREEN MYERS.
