Kennelly wins Kairaki run
Brian Kennelly (University) recorded the fastest time in the annual 20km handicap road race from Kairaki to Christchurch on Saturday, completing the course in 61min 525.
Kennelly was on a 41min handicap. He had the run of the race after >the back marker, Tony Good (Olympic, 42min) had pulled out about half-way because of the effects of influenza. The first runner to finish was Keith Van den Oever (Sumner), who completed the race in 75min 39s after starting from,an lBmin handicap. Don Cornes' ' (Avon,' 21min) was second in 72min-39s and
the New Brighton woman runner, Pamela button, with no handicap, was third in 94min 20s. Chris Burden (University) relished the going when she, started from a 22min handicap and quickly shot ahead of the preceding two packs to win the women's section in 75min 425. Second was Ann Vermeulen (Christchurch) in 76min 42s and Erin Baker (New Brighton) was third in 78min 355. University won the veteran men’s . section when Eric Hunter . finished in 66min .455, with Ron Stevens (Olympic) second in 67min 43s and Robert Forsyth (New Brighton) third in-71min 19s.
The first veteran woman home was Pauline Woolman (Olympic) in 85min 335. Diane Stead (Technical) was second in 87min 38s, and third, for University, was Chris Connor in 91min 3s. Results: K.
