Drop in population

The Riccarton borough has. lost 10.7 per cent of its population — 779 people — in the last five years. Preliminary figures released from this year’s census show that Riccarton has had one of the biggest drops in population in New . Zealand. Riccarton’s population in 1976 was 7280, according to the Town Clerk, Mr T. N. Neate. After the 10.7 per cent drop this figure would now be 6501. - Mr Neate says there are two main reasons for the decline. .... “Young people are moving, away from established families and residential houses are being taken over by industry,” he said. Another reason was that houses were being , jaulled down to make- room for business development. When there was a small population a slight drop showed as a bigger percentage, Mr Neate said.
