Lambs’ wool in demand

Two wool sales were held yesterday, at Invercargill and Auckland, the Press Association reports. Lambs’ wool at Invercargill was at a distinct premium compared with earlier sales. Crossbred fleece was fully in sellers’ favour, compared with the Napier sale on Tuesday, skirtings were in sellers’ favour and crutchings in buyers’ favour. The Southland secondshear was generally well grown. The offering of 27,393 bales was 32 per cent secondshear, 31 per cent fleece, 21 per cent lambs’ wool, 2 per cent crutchings, and the rest oddments. The main competition came from Eastern Europe supported by the Middle East and the Continent. The Wool Board bid on 46.9 per cent and had 22.6 per cent (6192bales) passed to it. The adjusted weighted average price at yesterday's sales was 250.83 c a kilogram. The Invercargill range of prices was.— Coarse crossbred ' fleece, 44128 s and

16,612 bales offered 60 per cent was adult secondshear, 20 per cent hogget second-shear, 12 per cent short oddments, and the rest full fleece and lambs’ wool. More than 60 per cent of the second-shear was 2in to 3in or shorter. Yields were exceptionally high. Competition was restricted, Eastern Europe and New Zealand scourers being the main buyers. The Wool Board bid on 80 per

cent and bought 46 per cent. Compared with the Napier sale, prices were very firm for full-length fleece, barely steady for better second-shear, and ■ poorer second-shear and lambs’ wool was in buyers’ favour.
