Narrow squash lead to Burnside

Burnside has taken a narrow two-point lead over Sumner in the men’s division one squash competition for the Blank Trophy with an 8-2 win over Christchurch Football. Football’s No. 1, Barry Gardiner, offered surprisingly little resistance to his opposite number, Chris Wasley, and only managed eight points' The only successful ’ Football player was'the No. 2, John Oakley, who continued his recent good form by downing Robin Clements in four games. Clements, who was ■ skunked’’ in the final game probably had his mind on other things; he gets married today. Last week's joint leader, Sumner, stayed within reach of the top with a close win over Christchurch after an ?-7 games countback. Rod Hayes showed contrasting form against Bryan Simpson in the battle of the number ones. He unleashed a dazzling array of nicks and sharp volleys to win the first two games comfortably; dropped seven straight serves to lose the third from 5-2 up as the errors flowed; and then cruised through the fourth with another half-dozen dead nicks. Two teams,, Hih School Old Boys I and.’Wigram, managed maximum points, the former more than doubling its tally from the prvious two weeks. ■ ... .

All the Suburbs players fought very- hard against their Wigram counterparts without' reward. Grsfeme Gemmill and Peter Lublow; both temporarily enjoyed lead?- of two games to one while Murray Carson; -who won the’ first game, reached eight points first in the second (8-6), third (8-6). and fourth (8-7) games against Grant Utteridge and lost the lot. Max Morrison had a mighty chance of going two games to nil up againt Lin Sparks when he led 8-2 in the second, but the latter saved five game balls and proceeded to win in four.

Old Boys were able to secure their clean sweep though both Lawrence Skurr and Viv

Hargreaves were taken to five games. Skurr failed to win a point in the fourth game against Hamish Dowell, but came back strongly in the fifth.

The Old Boys If team found its trip to Ashburton worth while and the top three players, John Tolchard. Allan Lowe, and John McKinley all won comfortably enough. In the women's competition Burnside H now has a quite significant lead of eight points after its second 10-0 victory in succession, Saskia O'Brien arid Mary Hunt dropping only seven points and nine points respectively’. However, the team will miss its top player, Jacqui James, for the next two weeks.

Christchurch 11, which now holds second place, prevailed in two of the three five-setters to grab an 8-2 win over Sumner II while Ashburton, playing at home, had another good win — this time over High School Old Boys. Sumner I had a useful 8-2 victory, though its No. 1, Merle Holland, struck Lorna Symes in commanding form; in the second and third games she found winning a point impossible. Points:—
