Rangers win own annual tournament

Junior soccer officially began its 1981 season in Christchurch last week-end, with first round competition matches being played.

However, with coaching sessions being held over the summer months at English Park, and with visits from touring American teams, the season never really seems to come to an end.

The annual Rangers tournament was held in fine weather, with the host club coming out the winner, with 51 points out of a possible 70. Burndale finished runners-up. The Canterbury Junior Football Association Trillium six-a-side matches were also particularly popular. Nomads eventually coming through to win this event. The entry fee of $2.00 for each team in this tournament is to assist future, representative teams to enter

the junior World Cup competitions. Tne annual knockout competitions began on Anzac Day, and this season all teams in the C.J.F.A. grades are eligible to enter, resulting in some fairly high scoring on occasions.

Western's tenth grade team made a successful start to the season with a 1-0 win over Technical, at Bamford School. The bumpy, hard ground made ball control difficult, but Anthony Barret overcame this problem to score the only goal of the match.

lan Anderson, the goalkeeper, Hamish Kent, and Graham Jack were others to perform well for Western, while Steven Somerville, Hassan Wong, James Ryan and the goal-keeper, Bernard Moulin, stood out for Technical.

Tony Bascick, the captain

of Shamrock’s ninth grade D team, played determinedly throughout the match, but was unable to prevent his team losing, 2-0 to Western at MacFarlane Park. Jonathan Gowland scored a good goal before half time and another by David Cox made certain of victory. Western’s twelfth grade team also made a strong start to the competition, with a 2-1 win over the more highly-favoured Cashmere Wanderers team.

A good passing movement enabled Carl Sweeney to score for Western and it took much pressure and some time before Cashmere equalised through Kevin Sullivan.

It needed a fine goal from Stephen Adams, ably assisted by Darren Aitchinson and Karl Entwhistle, to clinch the match for Western.
