Old bridge span for new crossing
One span of the old South Brighton Bridge will be used to make a new bridge across the .Linwood drainage canal at Charlesworth Street, ’near the Estuary. After the old bridge is pulled down soon the Christchurch Drainage Board will use the span to replace a concrete culvert that is too small for the cahal. Other material from the bridge will, be used mainly for landscaping work by the parks and recreation department of the Christchurch City Council. The council’s works and traffic committee was told yesterday that the access road between the Pleasant Poitit Yacht Club and the new bridge would be built as Slahned. Work on the road ad been stopped temporarily because of concern that it would cover too much wetland. But the committee’s chairman, Cr D. C. Close, said that concerned people had in-
spected the site and agreed that it was the best available. Embankments leading to the old bridge will be removed, providing more room for the Yacht Club on one side of the river and unoccupied land on the other side. Bad culverts Councillors said that there should be a temporary ban on vehicular use of the Guild Street culvert over Dudley Creek. Potholes and depressions had recently appeared in the asphalt surface over the culvert’s timber deck, which was also* in poor condition. The conditions of nearby culverts in Warden Street, Julius Terrace, and Chancellor Street would also be checked. In the meantime use of the Guild Street culvert should be restricted to pedestrians and cyclists.
