International terrorism
Sir, — General Haig’s accusation that Russia is “engaged in acts of international terrorism” must be a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black. Haig was deeply involved in America’s long and brutal war on Vietnam; in America’s round-the-clock bombing and near-destruction of neutral Cambodia and in the violent overthrow and death of Allende and his democratically-elected Government in Chile. Former President Nixon, who lobbied long and hard for Haig to be appointed Secretary of State, describes him in these endearing terms (“Newsweek,” January 6, 1981): “Haig is the meanest, toughest, most ambitious sonofabiteh I ever knew — he’ll make one Helluva Secretary of State.” — Yours, etc. M. T. MOORE. May 4, 1981.
