Sumner shares top squash

Sumner was enjoying the rather unfamiliar experience of sharing the top spot with Burnside after the second round of the division one men's squash competition on Tuesday evening. The team, which had “risen up from the murky waters of the Estuary,” according to a High School" Old Boys’ player, had its second successive victory, albeit a narrow one on a games countback (8-7). Sumner, normally near the bottom of the table, won at numbers one and three and the No. 4, Ryan McCutcheon, only lost to Christchurch Football’s Dave Welsh after a 67 min. five-setter. The other loss was by Ron Marshall, who fell in straight games to John Oakley, who had all but upset Canterbury’s top plaver. Rod Hayes, during the Southland open the previous weekend.

Burnside had no trouble getting a win over Suburbs. The top three all conceded just 10 points or less and Stuart Hargreaves, at No. 4, looked to be going the same way before aing the last three games to dermined little Leo Hiku. One of the successful players was Burnside's Chris Wasley, who has been selected for next months New Zealand colts internal tour.

The only team to register a clean sweep was Linwood, With all four players managing 3-0 victories over their High Schoo) Old Boys’ opponents. •" --S'-. -

Wigram, which had the first round bye, played strongly against

the other Old Boys' team for an 8-2 winning margin." Lin Sparks saved six match balls before succumbing to Lawrence Skurr in a rather uninspiring five-setter. At No. 2 Grant Utteridge achieved a creditable victory over Viv Hargreaves. An Old Boys’ newcomer, John Knight, showed plenty of talent against David Post in the third match to go the full distance. Ashburton had the satisfaction of chalking up its initial first division points through John Stara's 3-2 victory over Peter Herd. University, however, prevailed in all the other matches with only Steven Hailes extended, though Matthew Clements opted for climbing up the side-wall to retrieve the ball from the rafters rather than having to warm up another while on top against a nifty Ashburton drop exponent, Chris Buckland. In the women’s competition the strong Burnside II team has a. twopoint lead over High School Old Boys and Burnside I after a 10-0 victory over Sumner II: One Sumner player, Kate Carpinter (the No. 1), had to retire when she pulled a leg muscle in the third game but Jacqui James was already in sight of the win. Two of Burnside Is younger players. Susan Wasley and Donna O'Grady, went well in that team's 8-2 win over Sumner I while Old Boys' achieved a similar margin to stay on level pegging.. . Ashburton,.making its debut this season, had Czesia Bowan back from Australia and the resulting

strengthening down the order brought a string of three 3-0 results against Lancaster Park. Points.-
