• Christchurch doctors have been given $35,658 by the National Heart Foundation as part of grants of more than $650,000 for scientific and educational work this vear.

Professor R. W. Carrell, of the Christchurch Clinical School's pathology department. and Dr E. D. Janus, of The Princess Margaret Hospital, have received $19,560 to study proteins which transport fats in the blood and to apply this knowledge to patients with inherited blood-fat disorders. Mr Mark Wardell, post-grduate student, will be the main investigator. Dr Hamid Ikram, the head of the department of cardiology at The Princess Margaret Hospital has been given $16,098 to continue developing the computer processing of ultrasound signals for assessing heart function.

Mr P. J. Bones and Mrs W. H. Round, two bio-engineers in the department, have, already developed an jelectronic system which converts ultrasound signals into 'digital form, allowing the.''information to be processed by computer.
