Move to new courts begins
Justice Department moves to a new court and administration building in Durham Street, Christchurch, are now well under way.
Chancery House, a fivestory building almost directly opposite the present District and High Courts, will house domestic and civil courts and administration. Some of the building’s six courts are already in use. Two High Court rooms for judges sitting on cases without a jury are being built. The Small Claims Tribunal
will also be housed in the building. The use of a separate building for domestic courts follows recommendations in the 1978 report of the Royal Commission on the Courts. Family Courts, as recommended by the Royal Commission, will be set up later this year when the Family Proceedings Act comes into force. Domestic administration staff are due to sh'ift into the new building on Monday, and civil staff within the next few weeks.
