Race Relations Act
PA L Wellington The Labour Party might move a private member’s bill to make the Race Relations Act work against racial discrimination, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition (Mr Lange) said yesterday. Mr Lange was commenting on the ruling of the Race Relations Conciliator (Mr Hiwi Tauroa) that locaL bodies would be in breach of the Race Relations Act if they withheld facilities from the' Springboks.
“The act is supposed to protect people against racial prejudice, such as that practised in South Africa,” Mr Lange said. “For the Race Relations Conciliator to interpret the act to say that the Springboks were being discriminated against on grounds of race and colour by being denied facilities, is missing the whole point of both the act and the motive of the local bodies imcoming to this decision,” he said.
