N-test warning
NZPA Washington The United States Government has evidence that both India and Pakistan are doing “significant construction” at sites suitable for nuclearbomb tests, Senator Alan Cranston of California has said. There had been previous reports that India may be preparing to detonate another nuclear bomb, but Senator Cranston’s statement was the first public word that Pakistan also may be readying a test site.
India tested a nuclear bomb in 1974, prompting a protest from the United States. Senator Cranston, assistant Democratic leader of the Senate and a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, called upon President Ronald Reagan to notify both governments that economic and military aid would be cut off if they proceed with the tests. Senator Cranston's remarks were in a speech for delivery on the Senate floor.
