New league law
The new differential scrum penalty rule will be introduced to all rugby league grades in Canterbury as from Saturday, May 9. Canterbury delayed bringing in the law because it had not received the exact wording from its national .council. However, it has decided, to follow other provinces and rely on the rule interpretation given in an N.Z.R.L. circular some time ago.
Eighteen Canterbury players had their first experience of the differential penalty — which does not permit kicks for goal from scrummaging infringements, other than’foul play and obscene language — during the South Island trial at Greymouth last Sunday. Some said afterwards they felt at a disadvantage because Canterbury .had not adopted the rule. __
