Blenheim, then Europe for Peter Jones
BY
J. J. BOYLE
The Riccarton trainer, Peter Jones, will have Aramis, Indigod, and Third Degree as form runners at the Marlborough Racing Club’s meeting.
He will regard any contri-[ buttons they make to the' stable record as going away; presents. j Jones will leave soon after; the .Marlborough meeting with Mrs Jones on a holiday; in the Northern Hemisphere.; He will sp p - - much of the; time in England and Scot-) land and will also travel on, the Continent. This will not be Peter: Jones’s first visit to Eng-) land. He went there in 1948! F nnn after he came cut of, his apprenticeship with the; late Frank Roberts, hoping; to get opportunities as a[ race rider. Those opportunities did! not present themselves but | lie worked in the stable of| Captain C. F. ElseV, and was attracted by the early p-ng-ress made by a filly which was named Musidora and won the Oak :. Jones was back : i New Zealand by the time Musidora won the classic, but memories of that filly were revived for him when he developed and guided Little Brown Jug through a successful career last season. Godavari, Little Brown Jug’s sire, is from the same family as Musidora. Aramis gave the Jones stable its major triumph for the season when he won the $30,000 Easter Classic at Riccarton last week. Indigod and the two-year-old Row of Waves were other winners for the stable at the C.J.C. meeting, and after Row of Waves’ v!n two big offers were made
[for the youngster, of which i’Mrs Jones is part-owner. j No sale was made. There l is confidence in the Jones I camp that Row of Waves will develop his best form i over more ground as a | three-year-old next season. i Phillip Smith, Aramis’s successful partner in the .$30,000 feature race at Rici carton, will again rid him in the Marlborough Cup on ; Saturday. I Donna Hancock will ride , Indigod in the Strathconanl I Handicap, and will probably ;be on Scintillate in the; i Greig Handicap. i I Scintillate was a winner! I for the Thistoll stable at I Easter, and appears to have [come through her .acing chipper enough to improve her record at the Marlborough meeting. She ran 600 easily in 38.2 on the plough at Riccarton yesterday. Dolmar and Arvalant ran 1400 on the plough in Imin 325. the last 600 in 38.2. Habit Your Way and Mys- . tic Light, ran their 1400 in Imin 35.25, the last 600 in 40.4. Royal Princess and Regal Maria recorded 39 for 600. Mario Kempes followed in 37, and Early Dance in 40.2
