Twilight Mist, Take Care in fine trials for Oaks

Twilight Mist and Take Care advanced their claims to he two of the belter-fan-cied candidates for the New Zealand Oaks on Saturday when they filled the first two placings in the Breeders’ Plate at Addington Raceway last evening.
Both fillies started from 20m in a capacity field and they had made up none of their handicaps starting the last 800 m, at which point Take Care was last, two places behind Twilight Mist. Twilight Mist started to improve soon after, with Take Care still at the rear at the 600 m. She started to sprint up immediately, but Twilight Mist was three lengths in front of her with less than 400 m left.
Twilight Mist mastered Patsy Marie about the 200 m, with Take Care mounting a strong stayer’s run wide out.
Denis Nyhan did not have to drive the Bill Jamiesontrained filly right out to win by a neck in the splendid time of 3min 24.4 s for the 2600 m. Take Care lost no friends for her Oaks attempt when she got up for second, two lengths in front of the Timaru filly, Mick’s Gift, which came from back beyond mid-field. Hurricane Kelly showed gamess to take fourth another two
lengths away, with a similar distance to Patsy Marie, which moved up to second in the open at the 1200 m.
Quinella was next, ahead of Flint Hard, which came from near the rear to finish seventh at the head of a sadly beaten lot. Quiet Win advanced to within one win of N.Z. Cup class when he led for the last 1600 m of the ‘loo’ Pipers Stakes. He set a torrid pace and recorded the splendid time of 2min 30.6 s for the 2000 m. It was late in the race before Quiet Win was seriously challenged and he fought back gamely for Michael de Filippi to win by half a neck from Bionic Star which fought on gamely
: after being wide early. Glen Moria, after being ■ left in the open for the last ’ 1200 m did well for third half a head back and less than a > length in front of the fast i finishing Royal Decision > which was towards the rear until the straight entrance. ■ Philippa Frost had her : chance and was almost in ; line next, shading the suri prise favourite Superior i Chance, The Raider, Logan 1 Lea and Ben Rodden. Superior Chance broke at ’ the start and put in a strong - run along the rails near the end but failed to work clear.
