Enterprise too good in first heat of stakes
Enterprise, from North Otago, advanced in favour for the $16,000 final on Friday week when he made short work of his rivals in the first heat of the Sires’ Produce Stakes at Addington Raceway last evening.
The Lordship colt, an unlucky fifth in the Welcome Stakes at his previous start, hesitated at the start and settled well off the pace. He was still six places from the leader, Peregrine, racing to the 800 m, but Peter Shand began to improve with him soon after.
He gathered in the leaders about the 200 m and won handsomely by two lengths and a half.
Mel’s Boy, an . odds-on favourite, gave Jack Smolensk! a difficult drive over the first 800 m. After appearing to be struggling 600 m out, he came on steadily for second, a length and a half in front of Trevallen,’with Peregrine dropping back to
fourth half a length away. Manifest did well for a close fifth, his performance suggesting he was a likely improver for the final. Free Win, after racing up near the 600 m, stopped to sixth. Andrea showed great talent when she ovecame a bad start to win the D. F. Glanville Stakes. The halfsister to Armbro Lady put in a determined run from the straight entrance to win quite handily by half a neck from McQueen, which fought on gamely after appearing to have his chance. Star Prince made a renewed bid near the end and cut Jamie Ferguson out of third in the last stride. Sure Court, after being well back early and covering extra ground near the straight entrance, finished too well for Let’s Go, which came’’ on well, and Jamie Higgins, another to make up ground after an
early lapse. Birthday Lad did not receive a clear run in the straight and was right up fourth, ahead of Stormy. Just Sally, at odds of more than 40-to-l in a 10horse field for the Free Holmes Stakes, caused a major upset when she held off the unlucky favourite, Dundas, by half a length. Dundas all but went down at the 1100 m and he showed great ability to return a dividend.
Just Sally improved three wide in the back straight and showed gameness for her Methven part-owner and trainer-driver, Barry Molloy, to win by half a length. Lord Brigade, given the run of the race, was a neck back third, clear of Shabby Tiger and Chileno.
The southern fillies, Judy’s Girl, from Invercargill, and Timely Joy,' from Dunedin, proved a class above their Canterbury rivals in the
Sires’ Produce Stakes heat for their sex.
Judy’s Girl led from end to end, and, after sprinting her last 800 m in 58.45, she won by half a neck from Timely Joy. Then there was a break of four lengths to Capri, which made up ground to shade the fast-fin-ishing Ansett and Tebaldi. Although he raced keenly in the lead for the last 1600 m, Cyllarus lasted out the 3200 m in fine style in the Wool Conference Handicap. At no stage of the final 200 m did he look like being headed and Neville Benny did not have to drive him out to win by three-parts of a length from Eden’s Joy, which led for the first 1100 m.
False Regal came on solidly from far back after being blocked on the rails rnd did well for .third, ahead of Dreamy Dragon, with Braerhar close by, blear of the tiring Heather Chief.
