Milton Friedman
Sir,—Having listened on TV to Professor • Friedman one feels appalled at his simplistic view of the economic world. Professor Friedman believes that certain monetary manipulations alone can cure practically all economic evils. While this has never been true, it is surprising that such claims can be made at a time when economists no longer know what money is. Are overdraft limits granted by the banks money? Are government deposits in the Reserve Bank money? Are Post Office Savings Accounts money? Are credit cards money? While economists debate these questions financial institutions invent almost continuously new forms of means of payment. No wonder 364 prominent British economists recently discounted and rejected Professor Friedman’s “Monetarism.”—Yours, etc., W. ROSENBERG. April 27, 1981.
