Bailed man on rape charge
PA Wellington A Wellington man attempted to rape a woman while on bail for a rape charge, the police said in the District Court at Wellington yesterday. Wayne Clinton Hopkins, aged 28, a sickness beneficiary, did not plead to a charge of assaulting a woman with intent to commit rape on March 27. He was remanded in custody to May 12 for a depositions hearing by Judge Beatson.
After hearing a bail application in chambers, the Judge refused bail. He said that Hopkins had been released on bail with extremely stringent terms on March 18 after it was alleged that he had committed a rape en March 13. Sergeant I. Carmichael appeared for the police, and Mr B. Johnson for Hopkins.
