Tanker driver leaps for life

The driver of a fully laden fuel tanker jumped from the cab when the engine of his vehicle caught fire about Bkm east of Martinborough yesterday morning. The driver, Mr Ross Turner, of Martinborough, Wairarapa, flagged down a passing motorist who alerted the Martinborough Volunteer Fire Brigade, the Press Association reports.

Martinborough’s chief fire officer, Mr E. Colenso, said the engine caught fire

when petrol dripping from a broken fuel line ignited on the manifold. He said the fife had gone out by the time the brigade arrived. Damage to the tanker, owned by Associated Airways of Martinborough, was confined to the engine. The tanker was taking about 2700 litres of high octane aviation fuel to a back country airstrip when the accident happened.
