Newspaper poll on S.A. tour

PA Wellington The New Zealand League of Rights will conduct a national poll on the Springbok tour, through newspapers. “The New Zealand public has been let down by the Prime Minister’s turnaround on this issue,” said a Wei lington league member, Mr John Pike, yesterday. By stating his opposition to the tour, Mr Muldoon had completely changed his stance, he said. The poll-would give average New Zealanders the chance to express their views on the issue.

Similar polls have previously been conducted by the league on the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and whether New Zealand

sportsmen should attend the Moscow Olympics.

Advertisements were placed in selected newspapers, and people replied to the poll on a coupon sent back to the league through a box number.

In previous polls the league had been astounded by the interest, Mr Pike said. “We also got some big donations, amounting to about $20,000.” Poll results would be announced in a press statement, he said. The poll will be organised by the New Zealand league’s director, Mr David Thompson, who is touring North Island centres at present with Mr Eric Butler, head of the Australian League of Rights and president of the World Chapter of Leagues.
